Autism is an inspiration, not an illness … This has been proved right in the life of this 6-year-old charming girl, Johanna Jerry Thompson. Being diagnosed with autism, isn’t the end but the beginning of an incredible journey. Everyone with autism deserves a chance.
Johanna is being supported by her father, Mr Jerry Thompson, Mother, Ms Jinu Rachel, Brother, Master Johan Jerry Thompson, and her nanny Ms Haseena. Their experience with parenting differs from that of many of their family and friends, but they try to, share their experiences, unveil the journey of diagnosis, acceptance and understanding with others in the groups. Their life has been sparkling, rewarding and meaningful as that of any “typical” parent.
As all anticipate and assume, this journey has not taken them to a horrible, depressed situation full of pestilence and disease. It is just a different blessed place. At times, special parents like them encounter several different experiences and emotions in response to caring for a child with an ASD. Do not spend your life mourning the fact that you are a special parent, instead enjoy the very special, the very lovely things.
Jinu Rachel, the mother of Johanna is very much dedicated to promoting the inclusion and equality of children with any challenges throughout society. She says Johanna isnt a challenge for them but a blessing in disguise. Rachel believes there is a place in the world for their child. Whether or not she grows up to have a ‘normal’ life is not the most important thing. There is no shortage of wonder and rewarding experiences in the world, even if her life does not resemble the one, they might have anticipated for her. They celebrate every milestone of Johanna in their house – even the smaller ones. Johanna’s autism is what makes her who she is – and it does not need to be defeated.
Johanna loves dance (Vishakha’s), music, fashion, social work. She is accompanied by her mother and nanny for all kinds of therapeutic interventions and events. Even though Johanna is completely nonverbal with motor skill delay, her mom motivates and helps her to participate in all cultural events. Johanna got the chance to be a part of various ramp walks (Dubai Fashion week, Be Unique, Fantastic Family events, F.a.m.e, Starlight events, Expo 2020, Team Angel Wolf, David Atkin Enterprises, Heavenly Angels), got featured in D fashion magazine, gave her photoshoot for Dubai based modelling agency.
Johanna is also the youngest proud member of Little India Foundation UAE, an initiative, with a mission to eradicate hunger from the roots of our country. Workers working at a meagre income or those who have lost their jobs are getting healthy food to eat under the initiative of this new team in UAE. Everybody has a heart that can be touched by something. Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness. Being on the spectrum and having other learning differences, Johanna is used to working harder and having a great drive to succeed.
Don’t follow someone else’s dreams. Do the unexpected. It is your life that you are living, not anyone else’s. So do what fulfills you. Don’t fear the future. Don’t fear the unknown. This is what Johanna strives for.
