Rising Stars Celebrates togetherness on Onam:
Onam is a Keralite festival which commemorates the rice harvest season towards the tail end of the monsoon and ushers in the month of Chingam, the first month of the Malayali New Year. The festival is ripe with legends from Hindu mythology, the most common of which describes the annual homecoming of the demon king Mahabali from the netherworld. On this day, religion, caste or creed is not of importance. One of the most popular festivals of India, people celebrate it with great zeal. Similarly, activities of this festival are famous all over India for their grand scale and delicious food.
In Dubai, The RISING STARS GROUP, which is a non-profitable organization, headed by MS VEENA UTTAMCHANDANI also celebrated Onam by recreating the revelry and fun at Falcon City. The event was blessed with the presence of prominent personalities like Mr Bijender Singh and Mrs Babli Bijender Singh from the Indian counsel, Dubai, UAE, Senior Citizens, Mr and Mrs Ram Tolani, Advocate Sheela Thomas, Dr Sijo, Mr Thasveer, Ms Dania . All the members of Rising Stars, irrespective of their language, religion, culture, geared up to mark the celebrations in full fervor.
A pookkalam (floral designs on the floor), an integral part of the Onam celebrations, was also arranged to welcome the mythical King. All the ladies dressed themselves up in the ethnic white and gold Kerala saree. The Onam Theme song “Maveli naadu vaanidum kaalam, maanusharellarum onnu pole,” which roughly translates into ‘all human beings were equal during the rule of Maveli ‘was sung by few. They presented Thiruvathira dance, a ritualistic folk dance performed only by women. Two north Indian girls , for the first time,  performed a dance on a south Indian song. There were separate sessions of cinematic solo dance performances, group dances, taking photos with pookkalam and sadhya, wearing traditional attire which was in fact the main part of the Onam day activities.
Like most religious and cultural festivals around the world, Onam is marked with a feast called “sadhya.” This is an extravagant meal featuring over twenty-eight different vegetarian items methodically placed across the ribs of a shiny banana leaf. The Opulent Onam Feast was sponsored by Ms Anju, Owner of Magnum Clinic. It was in fact the first experience of some of the north Indian friends to taste and witness such a feast laid on a banana leaf.
All in all, Onam is a festival that unites all communities. It is a festival that erases all the boundaries we have created. People celebrate it with joy and zeal and enjoy the days to the fullest each year.
