Hostel Diaries

Getting on the bus with a heart full of hopes, I wondered how I would evolve in a new environment. A bag full of anxiety weighed on my shoulders, filled with questions about how life would turn out once I reached there. From being hesitant and unsure, I’ve become a “Whatever comes, we’ll deal it” kind of person. That’s the beauty of life – it transforms you in ways you never expect. As someone who loves traveling, this journey wasn’t as exciting as the others; I was hesitant. Leaving behind my loved ones, my room – a museum of memories, my living diaries, and the little fairies who sprinkled smiles on my face – my cats were the worst and the beginning of this new journey, a new chapter. The start of the latest chapter felt like a bittersweet departure, heavy with loss yet brimming with possibilities.

A hostel can be a colorful, mesmerizing amusement park or a derelict, emotionless graveyard. It all depends on the people you meet and how you choose to blend in. If asked to choose from the above options, I would like to add one more option: “ None of the above.” And that fits perfectly for me, as hostel life was a mix of experiences – neither entirely joyful nor utterly despairing. Like everything else in my life, it existed in the intermediate space. As far as I know, I’ve always been an “in-between” person. Neither good nor bad, neither happy nor sad, neither satisfied nor dissatisfied, neither dead nor alive…the list goes on. And I’ve always thought, why am I in between all

these situations…maybe I’m like the cream between the biscuits, the cream – the middle part gives the overall flavor…yeah…that makes a lot of sense.

As much as salt is essential to give taste to the food, my home was important to me; it was the taste of my life. The hostel days made me realize these days will never have salt. For all the students who have left their homes, who have come a long distance and stayed in a hostel or PG, the most aching moments will be the thought of the home. We have all heard the quote, “Home is the place where the heart is,” and it’s true. Home is where our mind travels first, whether it’s happiness or sadness. Our minds always wander back to that safe space. Staying away from home for the first time made me perceive it is not for the weakest.

The hostel diaries don’t only revolve around the hostel comics; they intertwine the sagas of the college, too. It’s been one and a half years since I joined this college, but I only remember the first few days of the first semester. Time indeed flies, but I never thought it would take a rocket to fly around. Thousands of faces and forgotten names, unfamiliar teachers, and classrooms became part of a chapter in my life. A small chapter, which is invaluable. I don’t know why they divided life into phases such as school life, college life, work life, etc.. School life was never a life; it took away life, and work is no different from it. But college life is a very short period of time that we get to find out the essence of living. It’s a period of living that colors our life and adds fragrance to the frame and breath of the body.

In my diaries of memories, the pages of hostel diaries have witnessed my struggles, growth, and unfiltered selves, shaping me into who I am today. While the hostel life may not have been perfect, its imperfections were what made it real. As we are going to pack our bags and step into new chapters, the memories forged will forever echo in our minds, reminding us of a time when we lived, learned, and loved life to its fullest.
