Nothing is Simple Anymore (A Childhood Lament)

I wore dresses with confidence.
Let my hair out and not care about the mess,
A, B, Cs, and musical chairs,
Life was simple when I was free as a butterfly,
Oh, how short they survive.

I dream of the future.
And who I wanted me to be.
Every birthday meant more candles on my cake.
Life was simple with fantasies and wishes I could make,
Never knowing that they’d grow scarce.

Now, I learn from my mistakes.
I stack boxes the size of pyramids
I see the world without its filter
There’s no glitter- it’s black and white.
Life used to be so simple with just Today and tonight.

Now, there's always a weight on my shoulders
Wiser and older, but I don't recognize myself.
I don’t see rainbows and sunshine,
Knowledge does come with a price.
Everything I’ve ever known is a complicated Morse Code
Carefully woven, every particle has its own story to be told.
Death used to be just another “goodbye."

Birthday used to be saying "hello human" for the first time.

Life was so simple when the truth was wrapped with ribbons and bows,
And the world seemed so small, it would fit in a pre-school drawing with ‘the sun and the
crows’.
Little did we know.
There are questions that the universe doesn’t have answers for
Battles we don’t know why we’re fighting for
Nothing is Simple Anymore.

Life used to be so simple,
But not anymore
not anymore.
